A local hidden gem worth visiting: Restaurant Seeblick @ Kurhotel & Privatklinik Oberwaid (15. July 2017)

A local hidden gem – that’s what the Kurhotel & Privatklinik Oberwaid is. I was invited to visit the premise and the service overall was truly outstanding starting with a great welcome in the spa, an amazingly relaxing massage, and last but not least by a great “Margarita (tequila, cointreau, fresh lime juice)” (CHF 13.00) in the garden of the hotel. I did not expect that but the garden is absolutely gorgeous and definitely worth a visit, sitting down and enjoying your drink.

While we had to be a bit patient in order to get our drinks, the waitress was incredibly friendly and caring – just as you would great service expect to be. Given that the majority of the people seemed to be regular guests at the premise (given somehow everyone knew each other), I understand the priorities in terms of service.

Even if you are seated inside, you have a lovely view into the garden …

… and it is also comfortable inside.

What is truly interesting about the place that it is a sanatorium already for more than a hundred years where they used to treat people with nervous disorders. And it is still a place where people come to cure themselves but it is also more than that. They have a lovely restaurant called Restaurant Seeblick (view onto the lake).

We were offered to pick from a couple of different breads to start …

… which went well with the butter served.

There is a menu you get to pick from and I decided to go for the “salad and starters buffet” given it offered the biggest variety.

And you would really find high quality ingredients to assemble your ‘starter plate’ – it was definitely a good starter.

As a second course, I went for the “curry coco cream soup with tuna” and while it did not look that amazing at first, it was absolutely sound. The soup had an intense yet subtle taste of curry and the tuna stripes which were in the soup really were of good quality. An interesting combination I would not immediately have come up with but definitely worth trying.

As an in between course, they offered a “banana sorbet” which was especially interesting as I haven’t tried that before. I’ve had sorbets, I’ve had banana, I’ve even had banana ice cream before but never banana sorbet. And frankly, it was great and something else than you usually get (like a lemon sorbet).

The menu read “slice of beef entrecôte with sauce Hollandaise served with two types of zucchini, thyme-flavoured” I was expecting a very small meal given they were writing about a slice. But there were actually three slices so it made a proper meal – and a good one! The meat was tender and aromatic as it should be. As I’m really a ‘sauce guy’, I loved the fact that they’ve offered more than enough sauce with the dish.

And I was quite surprised about how tasty the “taglierini” which came with it were. Besides the ‘banana sorbet’, the main course was definitely my highlight!

In order to fulfill all their guests’ wishes, they also have a dessert trolley offering a variety of different desserts including fresh fruit and some other things which you won’t find on the trolley.

I went for the “frozen yogurt with berries” for dessert and I liked it a lot as the berries were fresh and the frozen yogurt has this slight sourness of natural yogurt – something I quite enjoy to finish a meal.

After the mandatory ‘double espresso’ which was okay …

… the friandises were served: “coco chocolates, strawberry jelly, and chocolate ‘coins'”. I liked the coco chocolates and the strawberry jelly a lot but the chocolate coins were a bit too dry for my personal gusto.

Besides a great meal, we were also able to enjoy a good bottle of wine. And while the first one we’ve tried (I forgot the name) wasn’t to my gusto, this one definitely made the deal.

The restaurant itself is nicely setup inside but with a strong functional decoration given the majority of the guests seem to be hotel guests. However, the view you get onto Lake Constance is lovely. Just make sure that you book a table by the window when you’re reserving your table (and I’d suggest booking your table in advance given it gets quite crowded in the evening).

In terms of service, they are doing a great job, are really caring and friendly – given that there are not that many waiters, especially when the place is full, you will sometimes have to wait a bit until someone shows up and brings the next dish. But all within the limits of comfort so you will not end up being annoyed.

As mostly when I’m visiting a place I haven’t been to before or I haven’t heard of, I do not expect much. And my surprise was all the more positive: great place, lovely and caring service and good dishes. Definitely worth visiting on a lovely summer day!
