Very simple traditional Finnish dishes: Restaurant Sea Horse (30. July 2017)
The Restaurant Sea Horse was recommended in the ‘Where Chefs Eat’ which I regularly consult and I must admit that this time I felt a bit ‘failed’ for the first time. I mean, the Restaurant Sea Horse is definitely a place which serves traditional food, however, in my palate it isn’t at the level of where other restaurants mentioned in the ‘Where Chefs Eat’ are. The place already looks incredibly simple (which doesn’t have to be a bad thing) and more like a canteen than a restaurant. The waiter was friendly and brought us to a table (we hadn’t booked in advance) and I ordered the “herring plate” (EUR 12.50) as a starter. Admittedly, the prices are super fair for Finland. The herring plate itself was decent too – I mean, the dish was simple but it was tasty but there wasn’t too much herring on the herring plate but rather other things like cucumbers, onions, potatoes, and beet root. The beet root in this combination was actually exquisite.
Given, it was time ‘to go local’ anyway, I decided to have the “cabbage rolls – stuffed with ground meat, onion and rice with mashed potatoes” (EUR 19.90) which were definitely falling into the category of ‘local specialty’. The dish was very cabbage-y and while the meat in the cabbage wasn’t bad it definitely didn’t belong to the best things I’ve tried either.
Overall, the food was decent – especially considering the price for Finland – however, not what I’d really recommend you to go try. At least price-wise, it is absolutely acceptable – including beverages (i.e. 0,2l sparkling water, EUR 3.20).
