Hearty and comforting food after a great hike: Restaurant Grimselwelt @ Hotel Handeck (27. August 2017)
If you are into hiking you should definitely pay a visit to this area – they have wonderful hiking trails and if you manage to get a ticket to get up to “Lake Gelmer”, you definitely should. One of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve seen in Switzerland. After you’ve circled the lake, it is time to get down (there is nothing up there to eat) and eat something – and closest to it is the Hotel Handeck with the Restaurant Grimselwelt. Given hiking can be intense, I decided to go for something hearty and chose the “home-made sausages from Handeck with French fries” (CHF 18.00) and while it looks like a rather simple dish (and, admittedly, it is) the sausages were quite great in taste.
The restaurant has a nice little terrace outside, like a porch, where you feel like in a Western movie and they are friendly and helpful in serving you. However, there is a tiny bit of patience needed when it comes to speed – not the quickest but making up for it by being solution-oriented. Additionally, the prices are super decent for the dishes as well as for the beverages (e.g. “espresso” for CHF 4.20, 0,3l beer CHF 4.50, and 1l of water CHF 5.00). It is not a place you have to come for the food but if you hike around “Lake Gelmer” it is the perfect spot to get some food right after.
