Lovely Cordon Bleu but the service is not entirely up to the task: Restaurant Gifthüttli (4. September 2017)

Frankly, the name of the restaurant is a bit disturbing at first, given it is called “poison hut”. However, in Swiss German it doesn’t sound as scary as it sounds in English. It is famous for its Cordon Bleus, so it was absolutely logical that I went for their flagship Cordon Bleu called “Cordon Bleu Gifthüttli (filled chorizo, mozzarella and herbs, piquant)” (CHF 34.00). At first I thought the piece of meat was quite small and a bit of a disappointment to me as I had expected more (i.e. a larger piece) but luckily it was quite thick and more importantly, it was super tasty.

The “Swabian noodles” (CHF 6.00) I took as a side dish on the other hand were rather simple and – for me – were lacking sauce. They were a bit buttery but not enough so overall, without the cheese from the Cordon Bleu, it would definitely have been too dry for me.

While the waitress was friendly and did her best, we were not entirely satisfied as my colleague got the wrong Cordon Bleu. Funnily enough we had talked about how sometimes waiters fuck it up and then don’t manage well. But she did manage very well and offered him a free espresso afterwards. It is sometimes really not that tricky but the way how you deal with it as service personnel makes a huge difference. In terms of prices, I think it is quite fair when it comes to the dishes but the beverages are surprisingly expensive compared to Zurich (e.g. 0,75l water, CHF 9.50; double espresso, CHF 6.60). Still, overall, the Restaurant Gifthüttli is something I can definitely recommend – and you better book a table in advance in the evening!
