Great experience but not as impressive as ‘word of mouth’ would let you assume: Restaurant Masso (8. November 2017)

The Masso seems to be on everybody’s todo list in the city of Manama. And while I get it in terms of how nice it looks, I personally do not understand it why people like it so much. The “bread and spread” served in the beginning is admittedly good. The spread is a bit too spicy for my palate but I seemed to have caught a piece which was a bit more spicy than the rest. The focaccia was great – a bit too oily though.

What I truly loved was the “spicy chicken livers bruschetta, deviled sauce crispy onions, grilled sourdough” (BD 6.00). I haven’t eaten that many chicken livers in my life but a few and I must say that is was the absolutely best and must mouth-watering chicken liver I’ve ever tried in my life. To be fair though, it was accordingly heavy so it was still bothering my stomach the next day. But it’s worth the sin – luscious as it is!

The waitress warned me that the main course I had chosen was a bit rich. The “14 hours braised milk-fed veal breast, creamy mash potato, forest mushrooms & sage gravy” (BD 22.00) was indeed very rich. While it is not really visible in the picture, the veal which was incredibly smooth and tender, was quite a portion. So much I actually couldn’t finish it which was a pity as it really was good.

So, you wonder why I’m not entirely persuaded of Masso given I just admitted that the dishes I’ve had were really good. Well, simple – as good as they were, as expensive the whole thing is. And frankly, there were a couple of other things which didn’t work out. We were asked if we wanted drinks to start but then the two things which my company asked for, a Negroni and an Aperol Spritz, were not available. Well, if you say you have “everything”, then you might fail once, but for sure not twice. Else, the service was caring and attentive, however, a bit more could have been done in terms of checking the water and wine glasses regularly and topping up accordingly.

The place itself is nice and you can still sit outside at this time of the year – very nice. The only thing is, that on a Wednesday it is still quite empty, i.e., it only started to become full around 9:30pm.

Overall, the Masso is a decent place, don’t get me wrong. However, it is not as good as people make you believe it is. At least not from my point of view and the dishes are super heavy. Can you go – yes, sure. Is it really worth it – only kinda.
