All but an Italian food offering: Restaurant Mezzaluna @ Emirates Palace Hotel (8. December 2017)

I love Italian food – and since I’ve lived one year in Milan, I’ve grown even more fond of it. However, the Mezzaluna which calls itself an Italian restaurant isn’t really an Italian restaurant. The “bread and spread” was fine and actually quite good. The tomato pesto with pistacchios was an interesting combination and quite a lovely one.

The “amouse bouche” was decent, was okay. It helped to kill the immediate hunger but not much more than that.

When it became truly ridiculous was when the starter was delivered. The “Focaccia fatta in casa cotta al forno e ricoperta di burrata e scaglie di tartufo bianco d’Alba (freshly baked focaccia bread topped with burrata cheese and shaved white Alba truffle)” (320 AED) was in fact a pizza and had nothing to do with a focaccia. Secondly, the truffle applied on that ‘focaccia’ wasn’t particularly fresh or aromatic, so again not really what you’d expect, especially not when you’d consider the price of the dish.

The “tagliata di manzo alla Toscana (grilled black angus rib eye, roasted potatoes, sautéed spinach and pecorino shavings)” (205 AED) on the other hand was fine. The meat was prepared medium-rare and it was okay. Too fatty for my personal gusto but else it was at least aromatic. If a bit more salt would have been used, it would have really been a good dish.

The “potatoes” served with the tagliata were just not good. Not only way too dry but they also lacked any type of aroma. A big ‘no no’.

The “tasting of Italian cheese (pear and onion compote, walnut and sour dough bread)” (85 AED) was a feast. I mean, you got a loooooot of cheese. A bit too much for my personal gusto. In terms of variety and taste, the selection was rather straight forward and the waiter didn’t bother to explain what kind of cheeses have been served. Well, what did I expect after a focaccia turned out to be pizza?

The interior design of the Mezzaluna is a bit outdated, the service is friendly and really tries hard but they can’t compensate for the food which is definitely average and considering the fact that we’re talking here about a hotel which is under the Kempinski brand, it’s just a sheer disappointment and under performance. At least the “double espresso” (34 AED) was fine. Would I come again? Definitely not!
