Close to perfect service but not the best beef filet: Restaurant Parkhuus @ Park Hyatt (22. December 2017)

The Parkhuus has been mentioned to me as one of these places where you get great beef fillet, so I obviously had to try exactly that. But before we go into the the analysis of the beef fillet, a couple of words about the arrival. You’re greated once you walk into the restaurant and straight away brought to your table. You get a small loaf of bread with a thick and intense but yummy tomato spread.

Given we were a bit earlier than the rest of the group, I decided to have a drink beforehand, i.e. more specifically the “Guanabara (leblon cachaça, acai, wild hibiscus)” (CHF 20.00) which looked quite heavy due to its color but was as a matter of fact refreshing and light.

As a starter I went for “romaine lettuce with Swiss bacon, brioche croûtons and a sbrinz garlic dressing” (CHF 18.00) and while I was a bit skeptical at first due to the rather small size of the salad but the dressing was exquisite and the pieces of bacon were chunky and flavorful. Only the croûtons were too big for my personal gusto.

The “beef filet prepared on the charcoal grill, 190gr, served with onion relish, café de Paris and root vegetables (carrots, celery, parsley roots, parsnip) and risotto Terreni alla Maggia” (CHF 66.00) was not really prepared in an optically appealing way. The meat, however, was tender and aromatic, so definitely fine. However, for the fact that this place has been recommended to me so many times by different people for the quality of the beef filet, I was a bit disappointed. Admittedly, that is complaining on a high level but it wasn’t as good as expected.

For dessert, I went for some “ice cream with vanilla, sour cream and lemon flavour” (CHF 15.00; CHF 5.00 per scoop). The ice cream was definitely fine but rather standard.

The service was very friendly, jovial but in a pleasant way and at the same time professional. Overall attentive and only when the rest of the group had ordered drinks, they took quite a while to serve those. Other than that, a great performance. With regards to prices, things are quite okay as you get a bottle of “Bricco dell’Uccellone, 2014, Braida” for CHF 126.00, a “double espresso” for CHF 7.00 and a bottle of sparkling water “Allegra” for CHF 9.00. So, all in all, the Restaurant Parkhuus is a good choice for a nice dinner with decent dishes, great service, and fair atmosphere. But in my books it won’t be recorded as an outstanding beef filet experience!
