A complete Italian wanna-be restaurant experience: Restaurant Oliveto (26. February 2018)
When you go to an Italian restaurant in a non-Italian country, don’t expect too much. At first, I must admit, the place is quite lovely and you feel comfortable there. The “Olive Spread” is still okay. When it comes to the wine menu, the trouble starts. Not a single wine is spelled correctly. You find all kind of spelling mistakes, basically in every single one! And lastly, the service is not really up to the task, desperately trying to be ‘fancy’ but failing miserably.
The “Fried calamari and shrimp” (6.500 BHD) are chewy and overcooked not really making it a tasty dish.
The “cray fish with fresh tomatoes, onions, extra virgin olive oil and white balsamic vinegar” (10.500 BHD) on the other hand is refreshingly good.
If you are looking for a proper burrata, the “burrata cheese with cherry tomatoes and basil leaves” (9.500 BHD) is quite nice. Especially, since the tomatoes are way more aromatic than expected.
My favourite was the “shrimp salad with citrus and papaya” (6.900 BHD) because the shrimp was fresh and not overcooked plus the papaya and citrus provided the dish with the lightness of the acidity.
The “Filetto di Manzo Angus Beef Certificato” (16.800 BHD) is definitely overpriced. The grill flavours are good but not outstanding and compared to other restaurants in Manama, this is definitely at the upper end of the price range. The fries are stroppy and not crispy at all.
So, in a nutshell, the Oliveto is nice for a drink as the atmosphere is quite lovely. When it comes to the food, it is really a ‘wanna-be’ Italian restaurant, not worth visiting.
