Truly local Greek food with tourist-level service: Restaurant O Thanasis Kebab Monastiraki (31. March 2018)
Sometimes, the pleasures when it comes to food are rooted in the simplicity of the dishes. I went for a “Greek Salad (tomato, cucumber, pepper, olives, onions, feta cheese)” (EUR 5.50) which was definitely simple but also quite delicious in terms of taste. The rather thick pita bread soaked in the oil of the Greek salad is the perfect add-on to the salad.
The “stuffed tomatoes with rice” (EUR 5.80) are not a food I would usually order but gout forced me to eat vegetarian these days. However, I was very positively surprised as the tomatoes were way more delicious than expected.
The place is located in a rather touristic area and the service is accordingly mediocre. They bring what you order, yes, but sometimes not in the first try the right thing and secondly with a friendliness like that frustrated old man living in your neighborhood we all had as a kid. However, worth trying. And apparently the souvlaki in the meat version are also rather delicious I was told. If you decide to check out any of these places, make sure it’s the O Thenasis as the other places are full of tourists while the O Thenasis is actually where the Greeks go for lunch.
