Exquisite service in a lovely atmosphere: Restaurant Trattoria @ Nira Alpina, Silvaplana, a Member of Design Hotels™ (14. July 2018)

I haven’t visited many Design Hotels™ so far but this weekend it was time to spend a day in the mountains and enjoy the view and the good food. While there is – supposedly – an outstanding restaurant on the top floor of the hotel, it was closed that day as there was a wedding taking place. However, the Restaurant Trattoria which is located on the ground floor is rather lovely in terms of interior design and Stefan, the waiter, really went the extra mile to make it an amazing evening.

I went for the “hummus with cress (puree of chickpeas with tahina, garlic, lemon and olive oil, served with crispy Lebanese bread)” (CHF 17.00) which was not like the hummus I had in the Middle East, however, it was definitely delicious. Just the ‘bread’ wasn’t enough.

The “Swiss salmon trout ceviche marinated in lime, coconut milk, coriander, chili and honey” (CHF 21.00) was definitely delicious but not sure I’d call it a ceviche.

What was truly breathtaking was the “tartare of Swiss beef with beetroot salad and crispy focaccia (150gr)” (CHF 32.00). The meat was incredibly tender and smooth like I haven’t had it in a while. Just absolutely mouth-watering!

As mentioned earlier, Stefan really went the extra mile to make it a memorable evening. The food was delicious, the service was exquisite (very attentive, still jovial, but not bothering) and the atmosphere is lovely. The “Bricco dell’Uccelone, Braida, Barbera d’Asti, DOCG, 0,75l, 2014” is definitely on the pricier side with CHF 119.00 per bottle but it was worth it as it matched perfectly with the beef tartare. However, there was one thing I wasn’t entirely satisfied with. He told me about a grappa which is produced by Braida and refined by Berta. I was already in heaven when I heard that – my somewhat favourite wineyard combined with my somehow favourite distillery – and it was a fail. The “Grappa invecchiata Bricco dell’Uccellone 2013” (CHF 18.00) was just a very regular Grappa with a rather high alcohol note. So, not my thing.

However, all in all, the stay at the Restaurant Trattoria was amazing and I can definitely recommend you to pay this place a visit when you are in St. Moritz or Silvaplana – lovely design, caring service, good dishes and all for a relatively reasonable price. Worth going!
