Lovely local and meat-heavy food: Restaurant El Chanchullero (26. August 2018)

| January 14, 2019 | 0 Comments

The El Chanchullero is a place recommended by the tourist guide book “Lonely planet”. Given I was just damn hungry, I picked the first place which kind of spiked my interest when reading about it. The place is a tourist magnet, and for a reason. The restaurant is basically located on three floors and people queue outside to get a table. On the top floor, you have a nice view onto things. On the middle floor where I was ultimately seated, the AC is on to the maximal extent possible. Try to avoid it if you don’t want to get sick.

The waiters are friendly though and the kitchen is rather swift. I went for the “Surtido Chanchullero” (6.00 CUC) which is basically an assortment of three different types of sausages which is – on average – quite good. I mean, there were two sausages I liked and one I did not enjoy too much.

The “cerdo en fricase” (5.00 CUC) was quite a portion after the heavy starter. Make sure to maybe just take one of the two. The “cerdo” is delicious though, especially the way it is served. On the healthy part, the avocado is a bit boring in taste but else, you get a sound main for a very fair price.

The “mojito” (2.00 CUC) is relatively cheap and still quite tasty. The place itself is narrow …

… and you get to see a bit of how Havana Vieja (old Havana) looks while you’re queuing!

The interior of the place is somewhat interesting. In general rather simple, however, it is a bit too much on the ‘social media side’ if you ask me.

All in all, the Chanchullero is worth a visit. Decent food, quite packed, swift and friendly service, and last but not least, fair in terms of pricing. Coming a bit at off-peak times might help if you are trying to secure a table.
