Good but nothing outstanding really: Restaurant 50 zu 5 (8. November 2018)

| April 22, 2019 | 0 Comments

The “50 zu 5” is a pop-up which is up until the end of the year – so two more months to go and a solid three months in total. You get to pick from a rather small card between five dishes and two desserts. Alternatively, you take “tasting menu” (CHF 85.00) which includes all the courses.

The evening starts with “bread and olive oil” which is lovely but served in a somewhat unpractical way – given the olive oil is in a round bowl so it would almost automatically tip over when you dip your bread in it.

The first course was a “black salsify celery cream soup with mandarins and chive” (usually, CHF 16.00) which was a bit too oily for my personal gusto but overall good in taste. They could have prepared it a bit thicker but the flavours were refined and fit well together.

Second in line was the “glazed fennel with bottarga, kumquat and beurre blanc” (usually, CHF 18.00). I must say, the dish was nice but didn’t fully persuade me especially since the bottarga (fish roe) was kind of overlapping all the other flavours in the dish.

The “roasted Jerusalem artichoke with tarragon, pears and cress” (usually, CHF 16.00) was good as well but I started to miss fish or meat.

The “Kalettes (Brussels sprout offshoot) with apple MUS from Boskop apples, bacon and onions” (usually, CHF 16.00) was somewhat interesting due to the bacon but was not really inspirational.

What I liked a lot though was the “Swiss prime beef entrecôte, butter squash, seeds and jus” (usually, CHF 24.00). Of all the courses, this one was the only one which I did not consider overpriced compared to the normal price they asked for it. Although there was just one slice of beef making it questionable if the price is adequate. But at least the flavours were good and would make you happy.

Bill.

The atmosphere is overall quite nice but the service is not entirely up to the task. After we were seated, it took the waitress quite a while until she would finally show up and take up our order. When I kind of waved at her she was rather unfriendly in telling me to be patient from afar. Throughout the evening when the first guests started leaving and things got a bit calmer, the service improved.

In my opinion, the place is worth paying a visit to but I must say it is not that outstanding that I would have to go again before closing.
