Good aperitivo but lousy service: Caffè Monti (6. April 2019)
What I love about Italy is their aperitivo culture. Given I haven’t been there for a while, I had somehow forgotten a bit about it and was rather surprised when the aperitivo platter (EUR 3.00 – coperto) was served with something I hadn’t ordered. As soon as I remembered, I was regretting ordering the actual dish. Not because it was bad or anything but just too much food!
The “tagliere salumi (lardo di Colonnata, crudo di Parma, bresaola della Valtellina, coppa, salame, speck dell’Alto Adige)” (EUR 16.00) is a good selection of a variety of cold cuts including lardo. I must admit I was always skeptical about lardo as I thought that something which is pure fat cannot be tasty. I was wrong! So wrong! The lardo – put on a little slice of bread – is absolutely mouth-watering! I suppose it needs a special type of preparation to make sure it’s actually as enjoyable as it is – but if you manage to get hold of this kind of lardo, go for it!
The place itself is simple and not really worth visiting (at least not as long as you cannot yet sit outside) and the service is friendly but their level of attention is rather limited, i.e. they are just talking with each other while you basically have to wave at them. So, to make it simple, the dishes are great, the location is nice, the interior is average, and the service is not very attentive.
