First Class flight LX294 ZRH – NBO (19. April 2019)

Since I have had the pleasure to experience Lufthansa First Class a couple of months back, I was looking for more and managed to find a good deal with SWISS. The chosen flight was Zurich – Nairobi (LX294) in First on 1A. Once you’re seated you’re offered some champagne, a glass of water, and some nuts.

Shortly after take off, you get a little starter which was nice to initiate your appetite.

Once you really get ready to have lunch, they come with quite an extensive offer of what you can eat from the starter waggon: “fillet of Balik salmon, marinated snow crab salad with dill, watercress and cucumber, a selection of meat specialties from the canton of Zurich (Buffalo salami, Mostbröckli, ham and herbed bacon), asparagus panna cotta and salad with egg yolk cream, spring salad with smoked cod, pomegranate seeds and toasted pine nuts, sorrel vinaigrette”.

I went for the “fillet of Balik salmon” as well as two slices of “Buffalo salami”. I must say the salmon was good but frankly speaking, I prefer the caviar on Lufthansa flights.

The “marinated snow crab salad with dill, watercress and cucumber” on the other hand was truly lovely and enjoyable. There could have been a bit more ‘snow crab’ in the dish but taste-wise it was actually great.

The “herb soup with buttermilk cream and croutons” was superb. I truly liked the intensity of the dish and the flavor – and that on 33’000 feet.

Even the main course, the “bison tenderloin with hazelnut crumble, port wine jus, mashed potatoes with carrots” was exquisite. The meat was prepared perfectly medium-rare, just as ordered. The hazelnut crumble on top of the meat made it even better.

Finally, the “yoghurt mousse with pistachio and Felchlin white chocolate ganache, raspberry sorbet and shortbread” was almost the end of the lunch. Frankly, the chocolate ganache was fine but not as good as I had hoped for but at least the raspberry sorbet was super delicious!

Last but not least, you get some “Luxembourgerli” to finish off your lunch.

The selection of wines you get in the SWISS First is exquisite though – I had a good bottle of the “Douro Batuta Tinto, 2016, Niepoort, Portugal”. Strong, full of flavor and aroma. Definitely a wine which I want to add to my wine cellar!

So, all in all, I must say, flying First Class with SWISS is definitely something I can see myself repeating. But I must admit that Lufthansa – overall – has the better product. I am still happy to try both again ;-)
