Ugali – an interesting local dish: Restaurant Eagle’s Steak House @ Ole Sereni Hotel (19. April 2019)

Upon arrival in the Ole Sereni, it was time to have a proper dinner after a full day of eating. I went for the “glazed beef flanks on bone (400g, slow braised still tender & glazed with Johnnie Walker Teriyaki)” served with with “sauce Béarnaise”, “creamed spinach” and “ugali” (2’700 KES). While I liked the meat a lot in terms of flavor, it wasn’t so great in terms of consistency as it was relatively chewy and, therefore, not entirely to my liking. The “sauce Béarnaise” was good and so was the “creamed spinach”. What was super interesting to try was the “ugali”. I mean, not that I have ever heard of that before or even tried it. And I must say, it is – in combination with a sauce – quite tasty. Without sauce I cannot imagine eating it as it is way too dry.

The selection of different breads was quite surprising to me (and yes, they were served before the meat). They had “Guinness bread”, “garlic bread” and “onion and bacon bread”. The bread was in all cases rather delicious and went well with the salted butter.

The place itself is lovelier during the day (I returned three days later for lunch) as you have a view onto the Nairobi national park, although there isn’t much to see.

The interior is nice though and it is rather comfortable. On top of that, there is a lot of space as the place is not very crowded usually.

However, even if there isn’t much to see in the evening, it is in thus far nice as you can see the width of the place even when it’s almost completely dark.

All in all, the Restaurant Eagle’s Steak House is a place you can visit when you are in Nairobi – and especially if you are staying at the Ole Sereni between two flights. However, it is not a place you have to travel to to experience the dishes.
