Delicious Norwegian dishes: Restaurant Atelier (10. May 2019)

When you don’t book in advance you’re sometimes lucky to find something and sometimes it’s hard to find a nice place. This time, I was lucky. The Atelier doesn’t sound very Norwegian, admittedly, but it turned out to serve rather local and overall very tasty dishes. I went for the “reindeer tartar with eggs, pickled mushrooms served on stick bread” [reinsdyrkjøtt egg og syltet sopp serveres med pinnebrød] (150 NOK) which was a bit chunky but tremendously tasty. The reindeer meat was aromatic and intense without being overwhelming.

The “breaded & fried plaice with small potatoes salad and white wine sauce” [panert & stekt rødspette med småpoteter salat og hvitvinssaus] (195 NOK) also called the ‘simple man’s lobster’ was well hidden under the salad selection which was great in terms of taste. The fish which was hidden under the salad did indeed have a bit the consistency of lobster but was very different in terms of flavor. All in all, not the best fish I’ve had in my life but definitely an enjoyable dish.

The dessert was the most interesting part. The “sjokolade & toffee” (105 NOK) was heavy and intense but given there was kind of a caramel at the bottom, I liked it quite a lot. The “blue cheese ice cream” (35 NOK) on the other hand was truly enlightening. I was very skeptical about it but it actually turned out quite tasty! And I think they could have even intensified the blue cheese flavor!

The place is split in two parts – in one part they kind of offer a variety of food for sale and the rest is a restaurant.

What I like is the interior design – it really focuses on the food and the flavors.

And is generally set up in a simple but lovely way.

All in all, the place offers good local dishes, very friendly and caring service and all in a nice and comfortable atmosphere. Of course prices are a bit steep but it’s fine in terms of what you get for it. And the best thing: You don’t have to book in advance as the place is not entirely booked out for lunch.
