Interesting concept but unmotivated waiters: Restaurant Relæ (31. May 2019)

This weekend I somehow ended up again and again in the Jægersborggade and the Relæ was the place of choice. They offer a “Relæ Menu” (475 DKK) which is basically a tasting menu which started with “new potatoes and summer truffle” which was a pleasant start into the meal.

The first dish looked incredibly bland as it was all white in white but the “lemon sole with pak choi” was actually surprisingly delicious (hint: the pak choi was hidden below the sole).

Given it was asparagus season, it was clear that you would get some “white asparagus and barley” as one of the courses. The white asparagus was actually delicious and the barley reduction in combination with the creamy coating was the perfect combination of flavors.

Usually, I’m not a big fan of pork but the “Hindsholm pork …”

“… with asparagus” was actually great. The meat was super tender and aromatic and even the partially very thick fat layers were delicious. I liked the green asparagus with onions even better than the white, however, that they serve asparagus in two courses right after each other seems a bit off to me, to be honest.

The next course was “rhubarb and woodruff” which was – well, rhubarb. Something I could have easily skipped (and should have).

The “pastel de nata” which was served with coffee on the other hand was hot and yummy!

My absolute favorite dish of the day was something entirely different though. The “cheese course” (100 DKK) was basically a mini tostada with goat cheese on top. And it was so incredibly good and mouth-watering that I’m still craving for it now that I’m writing about it. If you have a chance to try the cheese dish at the Relæ, you must!

The whole concept is overall quite appealing in terms of interior – there are a few smaller tables but also one long table at which you’re seated and there isn’t any cutlery on the tables but there are little drawers at each space where your cutlery is stored. What a lovely concept!

All in all, the Relæ is a nice restaurant which offers good and interesting dishes so it is worth booking a table in advance. However, there is one downside – the waitress wasn’t really the friendliest and most caring individual I’ve met. It was more like ‘oh my god, guests! again!’.
