So promising yet so disappointing: Restaurant Amélys (9. June 2019)

| July 2, 2019 | 0 Comments

Usually, I’n not a fan of hotel restaurants if it is not the hotel I’m staying at but on a Sunday night in Luxembourg City, it is rather difficult to find something which is open and not called McDonalds or Burger King and the Amélys was open and recommended by the Guide Michelin 2019 as ‘Bib Gourmand’. Given, it was kind of a hard day, I decided to have something light for dinner and went for the “Salade César (Caesar salad, lettuce, grilled chicken breast, Parmesan, croutons and anchovy Caesar dressing)” (EUR 19.00). Now, the Caesar salad was actually quite good and definitely better than so often. What wasn’t great though was the fact that originally I had not ordered a Caesar salad but another salad which they had just ‘run out’. Somehow a bit disappointing.

Furthermore, the starter of my company had been forgotten so I ended up waiting for about 10 minutes until I was finally able to start with my dinner. Frankly, not what I expect. And when it came to the bottle of red wine I picked, “De la Cour” (EUR 43.00), way before the starter had arrived, it took them a solid 10 minutes into the starter until it was served. So, service-wise I was disappointed. And I must say even the friendliness and care of the waiters didn’t fully compensate for that.

The main course followed the name of the evening – the “back of cod in citrus fruits crust, asparagus cream, preserved citruses and green asparagus” (EUR 34.00) was okay but nothing overwhelming and relatively expensive for the portion. And of course, they had forgotten my “young leaves of green salad” (EUR 4.00) – which, admittedly, arrived within minutes but it is still not what I want if I am dining out.

When I had walked in, I saw the cheese wagon and had already decided back then that I was going to have some cheese for dessert. And when the cheese wagon arrived, I was very happy at first.

But I was – again – disappointed. I mean, the “cheese platter, 5 pieces” (EUR 12.00) looked nice in the end but the waiter had no clue what kind of cheeses he was serving. It was just “uhm, cheese?”.

So yeah, lovely location, super friendly service but definitely not up to the task capability-wise and rather disappointing in terms of what you get. So, I think the place has potential but they were not even close to that potential.
