Better rated than it actually should be: Restaurant Tremondi (17. July 2019)

The Tremondi is rated among the best restaurants in Zurich on TripAdvisor and frankly, I do not entirely understand why. The location is somewhat hidden but generally nice and if you get to have a spot in the little patio in the back, it is definitely nice and comfortable (and protected from the sun). However, it has its downside when it comes to the service as your waiting time for any waiter to show up increases quite substantially.

Finally, after we had received our drinks, our menu, and had placed our order, they served a little “bruschetta” as an amuse bouche which was okay but a bit unloving.

As a starter, I went for the “cold apricot soup, cream cheese, almonds, fleur de sel” (CHF 18.00) which wasn’t that great. The soup was – for my gusto – too thick, and it was somehow missing that element of surprise you would expect from a course like this. Plus, the whipped cream was somewhat overwhelming. And CHF 18.00 for the tiny plate was also not really what I would have wished for.

Luckily, they were flexible with the main course and also the execution was great. I had the “sole from Norway with beet root foam and edamame” and had changed to the “champagne risotto” (CHF 44.00) which turned out to be a great combination. Admittedly, the sole was a bit too tiny and a bit overcooked but the combination of flavors and textures turned out to be great.

What I liked a lot about the place is the tiny patio in the back and the atmosphere. What I also liked was the flexibility of the kitchen to cater for my request – however, the speed of the service and the actual execution of the food wasn’t what I had expected from a place which is among the top 10 of Zurich on TripAdvisor!
