A surprisingly good steak house in St. Gallen: Restaurant Al Capone (1. September 2019)
The cool thing about St. Gallen is its price level. I keep forgetting that the same thing in St. Gallen costs about 2/3 of what it would cost in Zurich. When reading that there was a starter caesar salad for CHF 10.80, I thought it was going to be tiny. It wasn’t! The “caesar salad (crunchy salad served with a caesar dressing, Parmesan and garlic croûtons)” (CHF 10.80) was not only big but also much better than many of the caesar salads I have had the past couple of weeks and months. But, it is definitely quite a lavish portion.
As a main course, I went for a “Big Swiss beef tenderlon (300gr) with red and green chimichurri steak sauce, spicy house sauce, and a mixed salad” (CHF 48.50). The meat was absolutely tender and the fact that it is served on a hot stone helps in thus far as that you get to decide how well you want your meat cooked. However, if you have the 300gr and don’t want the meat red, then the hot stone does not stay hot long enough for the stone to grill the meat accordingly. What I didn’t entirely get were the slices of pineapple.
The “onion rings” (CHF 5.50) which I had ordered as a side on the other hand were a bit of a disappointment as they were a bit greasy and not really crispy as I had hoped for.
The place is rather simple in terms of interior decoration and reminds you (as it should) of an American steakhouse. The waitress is very friendly and makes sure you get your food within a few minutes – a very pleasant experience. All in all, the Al Capone is definitely much better than I had expected somehow. If you are looking for a good steak, then, the Al Capone is the right place to go to in St. Gallen.
