Amazing dishes but no Swiss German speaking waiters: Restaurant 1903 @ Hotel Schönegg (14. September 2019)

| October 19, 2019 | 0 Comments

There aren’t too many outstanding restaurants in Wengen (which is kind of logical due to the fact that Wengen is rather small, highly touristic and the majority of the tourists do a one-day trip) but the 1903 is one of them. As a starter I went for the “fitness salad bowl “Schönegg” – salad leaves, roasted seeds with grilled avocado” (CHF 24.00) which was definitely good. I had somehow expected a bit more though of the ‘grilled avocado’ but it was really just an avocado which was briefly put on the grill so it would get the grill stripes. So, for this combination I consider CHF 24.00 a bit over the top.

The main course I had picked was “veal head brawn, mushrooms, chive sauce, potatoes” (CHF 44.00). You would somehow expect that you would get something which kind of looks like a veal head (I mean, I’m not saying I was unhappy to not receive a veal head) but you actually get a super pretty dish. And what was especially surprising to me was the fact how big the dish actually was! But besides size, the more important part was the fact that it was incredibly delicious! Just truly mouth-watering!

One thing did bother me quite a bit though – the fact that none of the waiters spoke any Swiss German! Not that this is generally an issue but it kind of feels weird when you cannot order what you want to eat in your own country in your country’s tongue. Other than that, the place is nice and the food is good. Booking in advance is highly recommended though as the place was completely packed (and so was any other restaurant we saw on our way to the 1903).
