Lovely setup and nice dishes with friendly service: Restaurant 50 zu 5 (18. June 2020)

The experience at the 50zu5 is almost always a very pleasant one. And frankly, in Corona-times even more so. The fact that you have to adhere to certain distancing measures makes it in so far better as you really have enough space between the tables which increases your level of privacy. The waitress that evening was very friendly and was doing a great job. We decided to go for the ‘four course menu’ (CHF 87.00) which started with some “focaccia bread with olive oil”. The focaccia was absolutely tasty!

The first course of the evening was “amaranth, coco beans, cherry tomatoes, blueberries and leaf salad” which was a small portion but a very delicious one. Especially the combination of the intense flavors of amaranth and blueberries in combination was an entirely pleasant one.

The “white asparagus cream soup with green asparagus, hazelnut and chervil” looked super pretty …

… until the soup was poured in. And it turned out to be also tasty. The soup was smooth, intense in flavor and with the ingredients pre-arranged in the plate, it was a great combination of different flavors and consistencies.

The “fried king prawn with cauliflower, beurre blanc, dill and koriander” was exquisite. The prawn was a bit too dry for my personal gusto but the cauliflower was absolutely mouth-watering. I never thought I would say that but this cauliflower really made my taste buds dance! Luckily, we got some more focaccia to enjoy that delicious beurre blanc! Super recommended!

The main course looked simple yet delicious – “Swiss beef entrecôte with new potatoes, parsley and sherry jus”. The meat was incredibly tender and at the same time very aromatic providing that intense flavor of meat without being overwhelming.

The wine menu is not brought to your table anymore and you have to go to the counter to pick the wine you want – understandably, as it is part of the COVID-19 security concept. The Barolo (2015; CHF 95.00) we had was exquisite and absolutely enjoyable. I can absolutely recommend you to have dinner at the 50 zu 5 as it is a great and atmospheric place with great food, friendly service and fair prices. Booking highly recommended.
