A mixture of Latin American flavors – but a tasty one: Restaurant Toro Toro @ Grosvenor House Dubai (15. March 2021)

I’m often skeptical when it comes to eating Latin American food somewhere else in the world as the flavors are so often so different from the originals. And I’m not saying that Toro Toro manages to match these one to one, but what is offered here, is actually surprisingly close to the real deal. The “tuna tiradito (semi-cured tuna, olive oil, coriander, aji mirasol, leche de tigre, cancha)” (AED 70) was great in terms of flavor and intensity.

What I loved where the “beef tacos (brisket confit, aji panca macha sauce, aioli, cabbage, coriander, spring onion)” (AED 75). They were that good so it was time to order a second round! Frankly, although it wasn’t a one to one comparable experience like when you eat tacos in Mexico, it was incredibly delicious and just made your taste buds dance in joy.

The “cachapas (Venezuelan sweetcorn pancake, halloumi cheese, sour cream)” (AED 60) are something I had never tried before and I’m pretty sure they are not served with halloumi in Venezuela but the combination was actually a truly pleasant one I can recommend anyone to try.

The “beef cheeks (8 hour slow-cooked beef cheeks, purple corn, red wine, creamy polenta)” (AED 140) were great in terms of quality. Not the best I’ve had as they dissembled in your mouth but there was still a bit of this part of the meat which kind of ‘sticks together’ which, in ‘perfectly cooked beef cheeks’, doesn’t happen. However, the combination of the flavors and textures was good – just, personally, the marinade of the beef cheeks was almost a bit over the top for my personal gusto.

The “chaufa rice (chicken, soy, oyster sauce)” (AED 45) looked like a side on the menu (and was labelled as such). But, to be honest, it was more a full dish kind of portion, so definitely over the top in terms of amount of food. But if you don’t have a main and go for this as a main, it is actually delicious.

All in all, the Toro Toro was a good Latin American cuisine experience – well, a mixture of Mexican, Peruvian and Venezuelan cuisine. But an enjoyable one. The atmosphere is generally nice and the service is friendly and mostly attentive. All in all, I can recommend you to dine at the Toro Toro if you’re looking for a kind of Latin American flavor experience.
