Nice overall experience but wouldn’t rate it with 16 Gault Millau points: Restaurant Huber (18. June 2021)

It is approximately 1.5 years ago since I’ve been dining at the Restaurant Huber – and it was time to do so again. Since there are not too many tables outside it does make sense to ask for an outside table specifically – else you end up inside. Now, not necessarily a bad thing since the inside is also quite nice but given Corona and all, outside is somehow more fun.

Once you have placed your order, you get served some “better, bread and spreads” and they were absolutely good.

I went for the “four course tasting menu” (EUR 79.00) which started with an amuse bouche from the kitchen, “shrimp, gazpacho, aioli”. The combination was nice and the amuse bouche was enjoyable. Personally, I found the shrimp a bit too dry.

The first course was “sea bream, watermelon, zucchini” which was refreshing and the fact that the zucchini were somewhat pickled actually made the dish super refreshing. In combination with the crunchy elements which definitely added to an interesting consistency, it turned out to be a good starter.

What I liked a lot was the “ravioli, cream cheese, smoked tomato, aji amarillo” as a second course. The ravioli were cooked al dente as should be and the stuffing was actually tasty.

What was much better than I had expected was the “farmer’s chicken, celery, cep, bramata”. Why much better than expected? Usually, I’m not a big fan of chicken but since it was part of the menu, I would of course take it, and flavor-wise it was actually great.

The “small selection of cow milk cheese from Tölz” was regular. Nothing out of this world, definitely, but okay.

The little friandises were a good ending to the evening.

What I liked a lot was the fact that despite a late arrival around 9.15pm, they stayed open until we were done eating and that was around 1.15am – a solid four hours, and that during Corona times. Chapeau! The service is friendly and does its best to satisfy the client. Now, there was one part I did not particularly like. I asked for a white wine to start and was recommended the “Kollwentz, 2015” which was great, but recommending a white wine for EUR 98.00 seems a bit a steep start without an explicit warning of the client. The “Barolo Serafino, 2009” (EUR 68.00) which I picked for the main then, turned out to be as good – although I do admit the white wine was great.

So, all in all, the Restaurant Huber is a good place to enjoy a decent and above-average meal. However, for it to become more, they would have to up the kitchen a bit and bring more creativity into the whole experience. Liked it, but was not blown away.
