Better than expected with friendly service: Restaurant Chilli Club (25. June 2021)

Hearing the name, I would probably not have walked in but once there, I figured that the place is actually quite nice, resp. offers a decent selection of dishes. It all started with “edamame beans (whole roasted Japanese beans, sea salt, lemon)” (EUR 7.00) which were good and tasty but a bit on the expensive side for Germany.

The “bread mix (Chilli Club bread, papadam, naan, yogurt mint dip, mango chili dip, curry dip)” (EUR 7.00) on the other hand was nice since it offered a variety of different breads on the one hand side but also a nice mixture of different dips. The only downside was basically that these were consistently the same dips which would also be part of the other dishes.

Since we were a larger group, it made sense to share a couple of starters so we went for the “tapas variation for 3 people (spring roll variation: chicken, shrimp, vegetables, mango chili dip | holy wan tan: crispy backed wan tan, chicken, Thai basil, yogurt mint dip | Thai chicken satay: chicken breast prepared Thai-style, curry, coconut, spicy peanut sauce, Chilli Club coleslaw | Chilli Club’s Crunchy Mix: backed samosa, chicken sesame sticks, curry dip | scampi yuki: tempura shrimps, salmon topping, cucumber, wasabi crème fraiche | California club: surimi, cream cheese, asparagus, bell pepper, leek, masago, wasabi crème fraiche)” (EUR 35.00) which was a nice mixture of different tasty things. And while the plate was prepared for three people, it felt more like it was for a bigger group. In any case, the starters were good to get going.

The “sushi sashimi ship (for two people) (tuna and salmon sashimi, tempura shrimps, nigiri mix, 3 sushi rolls of your choice: (1) Surf ‘n’ Turf: black angus beef filet sashimi, tempura shrimps, avocado, cucumber, teriyaki chilisauce | (2) Creamy Salmon: tempura salmon filet, cream cheese, avocado, cucumber, wasabi masago | (3) Crispy Tuna: prepared tempura-style, tuna, bell pepper, avocado, wasabi masago, teriyaki sauce)” (EUR 49.00) was a good selection too and quite a portion. Frankly, after having the starters and this, one would feel relatively full. So, it was time to digest and sit around enjoying white wine (Stellenrust Chenin Blanc, South Africa (EUR 27.00)). Luckily, the waiter was friendly, jovial, and flexible and allowed us to sit outside until 1.30am while the restaurant had already closed down. Which is really quite nice!

Earlier in the evening, you have a nice view onto the Elbphilarmonie and parts of Hafen City – all in all, really a lovely but simple view. In terms of ‘decoration’ – the place is relatively simple and not really appealing but the combination of view, friendliness of the service and actually good dishes for a fair price makes up for it quite a lot.

All in all, the Restaurant Chilli Club is nothing exquisite but a lovely place to sit down, enjoy the outside, and have something tasty to nibble on first, then to actually get a proper meal. Booking recommended as the place was quite crowded – even at 9pm when we had arrived.
