Good but not as good as advertised online: Restaurant Bis (9. October 2021)

I was positively surprised to find a restaurant with a 4.8 google rating in Montreux but it turned out that this was at least to some degree absolutely fine. The evening started with some really tasty “olives” which were coated in some kind of condiments which made them super delicious.

The head waiter made sure to sell a good dining experience by labeling why certain dishes are to be tried so I followed his recommendation to a large degree. The evening started with “heart of burrata on a tomato purée” (CHF 14.00) which was actually quite good. Personally, there was too much tomato purée and not enough burrata for my personal gusto since the tomato purée was kind of overwhelming in terms of taste but else, the dish was good.

I also liked the “tuna ceviche” (CHF 24.00) for which I went next since it was somewhat refreshing and good. The tuna was tasty but the apple pieces didn’t really add much to the dish, respectively, made it too smooth for my personal gusto. I would have preferred a bit of an edge to the dish, e.g., by adding small slices of onions or the like.

The “wagyu carpaccio with truffle from Montreux und foie gras” (CHF 48.00) was definitely not what I had hoped for. The wagyu carpaccio didn’t really taste like much and was, therefore, definitely overpriced. The truffle from Montreux is a lovely idea but isn’t really something you are looking forward to try from a taste perspective. Last but not least, the foie gras was actually quite good – some salt flakes would have definitely added to the foie but it was overall nice.

The “Chilean seabass, our special carrot purée and green beans” (CHF 52.00) was fine. Personally, a hint of salt wouldn’t have harmed the dish but it was good.

All in all, the Restaurant Bis is probably one of the better restaurants in Montreux as the dishes are actually nice but they are far from being exceptional, resp. in my personal opinion they are lacking condiments by quite a bit. However, the place is nice and the service is super friendly and attentive and, therefore, the place is still worth visiting when you’re in Montreux.
