Definitely an over-priced experience: Restaurant Reef & Beef (25. October 2021)

Since I had seen a food-related show on Netflix about Maryland and the famous crab cakes, I decided that I definitely wanted to try one of these. Not sure they are close to the real thing but since they were served here, I decided to try exactly those and went for the “Maryland Crab Cakes (the legendary crab cakes prepared after the famous Chesapeake Bay recipe, served with mango shallot salsa and mustard horse radish sauce)” (EUR 19.90) and I must say that they were actually quite nice all in all. Sure, it’s mainly fried crab meat in a crust but it is not only that but it’s also super delicious in terms of flavor, so definitely something worth trying.

The “Trilogy Triple Star (three ‘Triple Star’ filets with a variation of dijonaise, béarnaise and cayenne pepper sauce)” (EUR 46.90) is definitely on the pricier side of things but the meat is tender and quite enjoyable all in all and the sauces, with the exception of the Béarnaise which wasn’t that great, are fine too. So, it’s a decent dish but in terms of pricing, it’s really quite expensive, especially for Germany and Cologne.

The sides are also on the rather expensive side and they are not really that great in terms of taste. The “Baby Pak Choi” (EUR 6.90) was okay, the “truffle fries” (EUR 7.90) were a disappointment because firstly they were basically fries with some kind of truffle oil and secondly because some random cheese had been added which both is not really something you want in actual truffle fries. The “creamed spinach” (EUR 4.50) was at least decent.

The place itself is rather cool in terms of interior design and actually appealing, respectively quite nice.

When it comes to the service, I’m not entirely sure what to say. On the one hand they were very professional and relatively swift in delivering what we had asked for, on the other hand, when it came for example to settling the bill, it took them ages to manage to do that. So, not so sure what to think about the overall service quality really. As a summary, I think you can say decent food for high prices in a lovely atmosphere and average service.
