A surprisingly delicious experience but with a bit slow service: Restaurant La Fonda (2. November 2021)
The La Fonda is located in an area which has obviously not been affected by the bombings of the second world war as the buildings seem to be ancient and actually super nice to look at. Once you’ve found the entry to the restaurant which is located not in the main street but in the back, you’re seated at a nice table and get to wait a bit before someone finally shows up to take your order. Once they do and once they’ve done that, you’re served a variety of different breads with butter and olive oil – and as far as I can judge, the focaccia was great.
As a starter I went for the”artichoke bread salad (lukewarm egg yolk, home-made miso hollandaise, walnut)” (EUR 15.00) which was simple in terms of ingredients but it was also great in terms of quality of the dish.
The “sardines (August and September catch from St. Gilles Croix de Vie, cured and seasoned in native olive oil, served with home-made focaccia)” (EUR 13.00) are definitely a good choice. I still haven’t entirely grasped what exactly “Jahrgangssardinen” are, resp. what makes them so special but I must say that the quality of the dish was good.
As a main, I went for the “dry aged filet of a Txogitxu beef (180gr)” (EUR 41.00) which looked super boring at first but actually turned out to be quite delicious in terms of quality of the meat, plus it had a nice kind of flavor to it which meat so often doesn’t have anymore.
The “crispy stealth fries” were super crispy and enjoyable – definitely a sin of pure fat but also a sin which was incredibly enjoyable.
The “wild herb salad with home-made balsamico dressing” was good as well and definitely a good balance to the rather hefty dish.
The interior of the place is nice too and the service is friendly. They are not necessarily the quickest when it comes to serving one but they are friendly and generally rather attentive.
So, all in all, I can recommend you to dine at the La Fonda as the place is nice, the service is good (although initially a bit slow), the food is tasty and the prices are overall fair too. However, the place was absolutely packed also on a Tuesday evening, so I would highly recommend you to book your table in advance.
