Experiencing a Swiss tradition in the best way possible: Metzgete @ Restaurant Falken Wiedikon (10. November 2021)

I’ve already had the pleasure in 2020 to try out the Metzgete at the Falken Wiedikon and was happy to be able to do the same this year. The Metzgete (CHF 45.00) has a bit of a unique concept since it’s not just one large platter of meat you get but it’s actually served as two separate plates enhanced by a selection of sausages as well as sides which is quite amazing.

The first plate I picked was “Grunz” (crispy snout with pickled red onions, tender ribs on creamy leek, seared pork head cheeks with port jus, crispy pork knuckle with pear cream; raviolo)” which was exquisite – the tenderness of the cheeks, the texture of the raviolo and in general the plate as a whole was just perfect.

The second plate I picked was “De Zoifter” (seared pork head cheeks with port jus, liver terrine with apple mousse and pickled red onions, pork shoulder with caramelized pear cream, saucission Vaudois on creamy leek)” which was as great – with the exception of the liver terrine which wasn’t quite to my liking.

On top of all that you get “blood sausage, liver sausage, home-made pork sausage with mustard seeds and honey” as well as sides like “potato mash, salted potatoes, dried beans, and sauerkraut” and I must say that all of it is just great. I especially loved the blood sausage.

What you cannot see in the pictures are the pans which go around and allow you to further enjoy liver, kidneys and brain. Each a specialty of its own, also in terms of flavor and intensity. What was surprising to me was that the price for the Metzgete had stayed the same but the price for the wine went up by 10%. Again, we went for the “Barbera Pörlapa, 2017” (CHF 66.00) which is decent and works well with the Metzgete.

What I liked a lot besides the food and the price performance ratio is the fact that the service is super friendly, jovial, and at the same time professional. So, you pretty much have everything you need and want right there. Plus, the atmosphere is quite nice as well and you get to enjoy a traditional seating in a modern way. So, if you like Metzgete, you should definitely make sure to book a table early for next year (well, you cannot book yet but soon, I reckon).
