Lovely place in Colonia Roma with a decent balcony and good service: Restaurant Meroma (17. November 2021)
The Meroma was recommended by a friend who lives in CDMX, so I was happy to give it a try. Once you’re seated the evening starts with some “pan y chile rostizado” which was a good start into the evening since you’d have to be a tiny bit patient until you get your food.
Since we decided to use a sharing approach, it was time to pick a couple of dishes and we started with the “tapa of marinated blue shrimp with chile crisp” (180 MXN) which was incredibly delicious!
The “crudo of blue fin tuna from Ensenada (ginger scallion sauce, smoked shiitake, cilantro and tomato dashi)” (265 MXN) was good too but for me personally, the tuna was cured a bit too much so it lost its freshness, i.e., it wasn’t raw anymore.
The actual “crudo of the day (pecan paste, celery, serrano chile, fried parsley and lemon vinaigrette)” (220 MXN) on the other hand was amazing. Refreshing and intense with an interesting balance provided by the fried parsley.
The “grilled yellow sweet potato (hummus, freekeh, chile manzano, caramelized cauliflower, and purple basil)” (240 MXN) did not only look pretty but were good in terms of taste and texture. A solid dish one can definitely enjoy.
The “agnolotti (fresh cheese, roasted mushrooms, thyme, sage with a light butter sauce and grana padano)” (260 MXN) were okay. Personally, I have had better agnolotti n Italy and wasn’t that much of a fan but definitely enjoyable.
As a main we went for the “grilled lamb (crushed falafel, grilled cucumber, pistachio, labneh, arugula, and green zhug)” (415 MXN) which turned out to be quite good and interesting too. The quality of the meat was good and together with the other ingredients it would make it a sound and enjoyable dish.
The “crème fraiche panna cotta (caramelized pumpkin, mandarin surpremes, basil, and toasted pumpkin seeds)” (140 MXN) was okay but not something I would really order again. Not so much because it wasn’t good but mainly because I do not enjoy sweets so much. Having said that, it was actually better than I had originally expected (as I consider panna cotta very often very boring) since it had these caramelized pumpkin cubes.
Since the Meroma doesn’t only offer tasty dishes but also a selection of tasty drinks, I decided to give a few drinks a try and started with the “Meroma Mule (Mezcal, Cucumber, Ginger Beer, Honey and Lemon)” (160 MXN) which also turned out to be the best of them all.
The “Campo Santo (Holy Leaf Infused Mezcal, Tuna & Xoconostle Jam, Sherry, Lemon Juice)” (180 MXN) looked nice but was somehow a bit too dry for me – I suppose the sherry added what I do not really like.
The “Oleo Hikox (Gin, Fig, Chamomile, Oleo Saccharum)” (170 MXN) definitely looked pretty but also had a rather peculiar taste …
… and ultimately, the “Mezcal Fresh (Mezcal, Celery, Ginger, Lemon and Honey)” (150 MXN) was good but didn’t match the Meroma Mule. Trying out new things is of course something cool but sometimes you just have to stick to the very first impression since it might just be the best.
The place is nice inside in terms of design although it’s really not that big and only hosts about 4-5 tables inside …
… and about the same outside. Therefore, I would highly recommend you to book your table well in advance as else you might stand a good chance of not getting a table.
All in all, the Meroma is a good place since it’s stylish, it’s in an interesting neighborhood, the food is good, the drinks are nice, the service is attentive, swift, and makes sure you have a positive experience.
