A rare find where you’d not expetect it – Ioannis creating a great atmosphere: Restaurant Ioannis (30. December 2021)

| March 14, 2022 | 0 Comments

I had walked past the Ioannis Restaurant a couple of times before and somehow, since it is in the same building as an old people’s home, I was not really too keen to try it out. As fate wanted it, I ended up dining here anyways – and I was so positively surprised. The place is actually super nice inside and it’s not only nice in terms of the place itself but also in terms of friendliness of the staff and especially Ioannis, the owner (and name giver to the restaurant) who makes sure you enjoy your stay creating something one knows in Central Europe as Greek atmosphere in a restaurant.

I started the evening with “meze (Greek meze with pitabread)” (CHF 21.00) which was a selection of different spreads ranging from “garlic”, “Russian salad”, “eggplant”, “bell pepper and dried tomatoes”, “obazda”, “hummus”, “fish roe” to “tzatziki”. It is a good portion and definitely something you can easily share (since it’s almost too much for one person). However, I had somehow expected wine leaves or the like in a meze platter, so, despite the fact that it was good, I was a bit disappointed.

The pita bread is plenty and it’s also tasty. What surprised me very positively was the wine, the “Arothimies (2016)” (CHF 69.00) was actually an excellent wine. It didn’t have too much ‘length’ to be honest but it was full-bodied and aromatic.

Besides a relatively broad menu, they also offer meet from the meat drier. So, I went for the “40 days dry aged beef” which is cut to your gusto. My piece was 360gr and cost CHF 72.00 which is very decent in terms of pricing. What was even more surprising was the quality of the dish! The meat was absolutely mouth-watering! It’s a long time ago since I’ve eaten meat which was that good! I didn’t even try the herb butter or the sauce since it was just amazing!

As mentioned, the place is quite lovely and it also got full later during the evening …

… and the fact that you can peak into the kitchen is absolutely perfect creating a feeling of openness and trust towards the chefs.

All in all, I can highly recommend you to try out the Ioannis – definitely going to be on my “to try regularly list”!
