A true gem in the middle of the Grisons mountains: Restaurant Pensiun Aldier (1. March 2022)

Although it wasn’t fully booked that evening I would still recommend you to book a table in advance to make sure that you’ll have a chance to fully enjoy dinner. Once you’re seated and have been served your beverages, a little something from the kitchen is offered to start. The “salsiz tatar” is incredibly delicious and really gets your taste buds excited for the journey to come.

As a starter I went for the “French onion soup with cheese toast” (CHF 9.80) where the broth itself was mouth-watering but the overall soup was just average.

However, since we were a larger group, we decided to share a couple of dishes like the “rabbit salad from Piedmonte with Taggiasca olives, capers and lemon juice” (CHF 17.50) which was absolutely incredibly. The lightness and freshness of the dish in combination with the tenderness of the rabbit meat was just exquisite.

The “homemade duck rilette with sourdough bread and garlic glove” (CHF 13.50) is definitely something quite interesting and truly enjoyable. The rilette is somewhat smooth and coarse at the same time and has a nice intensity without being too much.

The “risotto Milanese with grilled medullary bone” (CHF 29.00) was my choice as a main course and the risotto was outstanding – smooth, still having a bit of a bite, and a great intensity in terms of saffron.

Somehow I didn’t feel like dessert, so I ended up ordering another starter and went for the “orange carpaccio from Sicily with pinenuts and anchovies” (CHF 13.50) and while the combination of onions, anchovies, and oranges is a bit of a strange one, it actually worked quite well. Especially, since the saltiness of the anchovies in combination with the onion flavors is intense but is balanced off very well with the orange carpaccio. Truly enjoyable.

Finally, since it was a savoury meal anyways, I went for a “handmade veal tatar from Engadin with olive oil, garlic, and parmesan” (CHF 19.00) to finish the evening. And the veal tatar was smooth, rich, and just very enjoyable overall. Adding a bit of lemon to the equation made it an even better dish – a great ending to a marvelous dinner.

The restaurant is located in a place called ‘library’ which makes sense since on the walls you have quite some books lined up which is quite lovely in terms of interior design. What is not so lovely is the fact that the place is relatively grim in terms of lighting.

The service is super friendly and attentive and frankly speaking makes sure that you have everything you need and want. Even when you order starters for dessert, they are not even wondering but make sure you get what you want quickly.

The place is not only great in terms of what you get to eat but also in terms of atmosphere which becomes clear the moment you walk there – even from the outside, the Pensiun Aldier is appealing. Definitely a must visit when you’re in the area.
