A decent Swiss food experience in the middle of nowhere: Restaurant Rathaus (22. March 2022)
It was more randomly that I ended up in the Restaurant Rathaus in Altstätten but sometimes things are much better than you’d expect them to be. The good thing is that you will always find a table since the place is relatively spacious – however, if you go towards the weekend, I would recommend you to book a table in advance. Once you’ve placed your order, you’re getting some “focaccia with tomato spread and chorizo” which is quite nice to start but the focaccia is definitely a bit too dry for my personal gusto.
To start, I went for a “lamb’s lettuce with egg and bacon” (CHF 14.00) which was quite generous as a portion. What I liked about the bacon was the fact that it was nicely cripsy and had a relatively low fat level.
The “pork Cordon Bleu from Appenzell with cheese from Appenzell, served with vegetables” (CHF 33.00) was good too. The filling was relatively thick and intense in flavor. But just how I like it. Personally, without ketchup, the whole thing would have been a bit too dry for me but in combination with it, it makes for a good bite.
The service personnel at the Rathaus is very friendly and attentive and makes sure you have everything you need within a short period of time. So, all in all, I can recommend the Restaurant Rathaus when you’re in the vicinity. The place isn’t anything spectacular but it is a sound and tasty option for traditional Swiss dishes.
