A delicious vegan former pop-up restaurant: Restaurant An Chay (17. May 2022)
The An Chay now is a permanent establishment of what once used to be a pop-up restaurant – the place is in thus far still following the concept of a pop-up restaurant since you cannot book a table, but it’s a first-come-first-servce principle which has its advantages, but on the other hand, you need to make sure that you’re there rather early as else you won’t stand a chance to score a table. Luckily, we arrived around 6.30pm, which allowed us to find a nice table outside. What I wasn’t so aware of was the fact that the place is vegan.
We went for the “Goi Du Du (spicy papaya salad)” (CHF 12.00) as a first starter to share which is overall quite okay in terms of flavour but, frankly, also a bit boring in terms of making your taste buds dance (respectively, not making your taste buds dance).
The “Xoi Chay (savoury sticky rice, vegan sausage & mushrooms)” (CHF 13.00) is actually very enjoyable. The combination of different textures and flavours makes it quite a nice bite. And the vegan sausage is actually surprisingly good.
As a main course, I went for the “Com Thit Bam Chay (rice bowl with spicy vegan minced meat, herbs)” (CHF 23.00) which was a great dish – tasty, full of flavour – but very unpractical to eat since you would want to mix everything together which is super difficult if you have many ingredients which are rather ‘small’ but you only have a plate and not a bowl.
When the weather is nice as it was these days, you should definitely try to sit outside, but you also have the option to sit inside. And you have to go inside anyway since they do not take your order at the table, but you have to go inside, place your order, and pay right there. Now, that I get somehow but if you want to transfer to a restaurant and not be a canteen, I would advise changing that. Other than that, the food is brought to the table – and kind of like in Starbucks, they walk outside, yell your name, and you have to make sure to pay attention that you don’t miss it.
Despite the fact that I was not aware that the place is vegan, I must say I quite liked it. The place is rather simple overall but still very nice in terms of what you experience – good food, fair prices, and somehow atmospheric due to the vibe. So, if you like vegan cuisine, I can actually recommend the Restaurant An Chay – just make sure to go early as else you won’t stand to score a table.
