Grossly overrated and not worth visiting: Restaurant The Wild Goose Grill (22. May 2022)

FALSE ADVERTISING! That’s what this place is all about. It’s trying so hard to be something it’s not. The 4.7 Rating on Google is in no way justified. The place looks rather old (okay, one can always argue about taste) in terms of its interior design. Sure, things don’t have to be ‘modern’ but you’re feeling like you’ve travelled 20 years back in time.

In any case, when placing the order, we didn’t know that yet and the description of the dishes didn’t sound too bad. The “poached rabbit saddle (stuffed with chicken mousse and truffle oil, baby carrots, apple puree, peas, puff pastry crouton, red wine jus)” (EUR 16.00) was looking quite nice when served. I mean, it’s a pretty little plate, isn’t it. Well, the problem wasn’t the looks but it was really the fact that the meal didn’t taste like anything. Sure, the pear droplets added a bit of sweetness to it, but the rabbit was dry, the peas were boring, and even the red wine sauce didn’t really add anything.

Sometimes a dish ain’t great, sure, so that can happen. So, we went for the “Côte de Boeuf” (EUR 80.00) which seemed like a good deal, and it was in terms of the price you pay for the size of the piece of meat. It took the head of the restaurant quite a while to cut the meat, so we were waiting anxiously to get the things on the plate and finally in front of us.

And the meat looked quite nice – not medium-rare as requested, but fine. And the meat was absolutely fine. Sure, not the best in my life, but decent. Nice grill flavour, not medium-rare, lack of salt and pepper (but one can always help one self with that). But let’s also talk about the rest. Not sure what the salad did on the plate, but let me tell you that the carrots were actually the best thing of that meal.

You would think that a selection of sauces is nice, right? Like the “Café de Paris butter, wild mushrooms, and pepper sauce” (in that order) would taste good. The butter was okay, the pepper sauce didn’t taste like anything, and the wild mushroom sauce was cold and just disgusting. I’m picky for a restaurant to get into the very high rankings, yes. I’m also tolerant when it comes to putting restaurants into the bottom but man, this sauce was just gross.

I had high hopes that at least the “goose fat potatoes or the mashed potatoes” were great. Since the fries at lunch weren’t really a thing, I hope the goose fat ones would be nice and crispy. And they were, a bit, and then it was still all floury inside. Really a disappointment.

The “broccoli and green beans with roasted almonds” became my second favourite bite of the evening, after the carrots used for garnishing the plate.

The place looks how it looks. Not bad really, but also far from modern. What is baffling is the service – the head of the restaurant keeps trying so hard to make it all perfect but he just overdoes it. Way too close, just always there – like, leave me alone and let me enjoy my food (if it was enjoyable).

All in all, The Wild Goose Grill is not worth the travel to Dublin, and neither from the city centre to the outskirts where it is located. Frankly, I don’t understand why the place would have a rating of 4.7 and I don’t get how this place can survive on this quality when it’s only open a few evenings a week. And, not helping this, but, don’t go – it’s not worth it!
