A nice pop-up where you need to be patient: Pop-Up Restaurant Rössli Garage Albisrieden (25. May 2022)

Sometimes you’re lucky, and the pop-up restaurant is in walking distance from home – like this time. The Pop-Up Restaurant Rössli Garage was organized in the former Jaguar Garage and was set quite nicely. It looked, at first, that the place was not going to fill up, but I suppose it was really just that we were among the first ones to enter. The place is quite lovely and atmospheric, and so is the service – but you have to be patient to get what you want. Although they are quick, they are not super quick. I started with a “Negroni” (CHF 14.50) which was absolutely good and set the mood perfectly.

Once you get started, they serve some “bread and olive oil” which is absolutely fine, but somehow I would have wished for a bit more sophisticated version of salt.

The menu is relatively simple – you can pick any four courses out of the six available ones in the “four-course menu” (CHF 94.00), so I went for a savoury experience starting with “Cold Meat (vitello tonnato ‘Rössli’ style)” (usually, CHF 24.00) which was actually quite good. The vitello was cut a bit too thick for my personal gusto but was overall quite enjoyable as a combination.

As a second course, I went for the “Vegi Pure (green asparagus with vinaigrette and egg)” (usually, CHF 28.00) which did not only look appealing, but it also tasted good. The asparagus was rich in flavour, the egg yolk perfect, and the roasted peanuts tasty, however, a bit too roasted for my personal gusto. If they had roasted them slightly less, the dish would have been even better.

Then, the waiting began. Somehow, someone else got our main dish, which made us wait almost one hour (which is definitely too long)! But finally, the “beef tagliata (entrecôte with avocado tomato salsa and vegetables)” (usually, CHF 42.00) was served. And it was worth the wait. The meat was perfect, rich, full of flavour. The avocado tomato salsa was fine as well, but not really on the meat (but separately, it was quite enjoyable). Last but not least, the carrot was delicious. The only thing which didn’t really fit on the plate, I found, were the roasted peanuts.

Last but not least, I went for the “pasta e basta (pasta with smoked salmon, capers and lemon)” (usually, CHF 26.00) which is a bit of a funny choice, admittedly, to end the dinner. However, the pasta was actually perfect – intense, full of flavour, and the smoked salmon really added to the whole experience.

I liked the place quite a lot – especially, considering that this was a garage, they made the absolute best out of it …

… which would be part why I would want to return. However, since they are closing down in three days (May, 28), there is no chance to visit again. I’ll keep them on my radar though to see if they do another pop-up (or will visit them in the Restaurant zum Weissen Rössli, once the renovations are finalized).
