Exquisite Peruvian-inspired dishes to share: Restaurant Barranco (1. June 2022)

| July 1, 2022 | 0 Comments

It used to be super tricky to find a table at the Barranco, but it seems that this has changed since Corona. Booked the evening before, tables were still available. The idea of the place is to share your dishes you order, so it’s pretty much just the easiest thing to order more or less the whole menu if you’re more than three people. Else, I would suggest being a bit more selective.

The “Salmón Ceviche (raw Swiss alpine salmon, fennel leche de tigre, radishes, avocado wasabi emulsion, ikura)” (CHF 26.00) remains delicious – tasty salmon, perfect in combination with the leche de tigre.

The “Hamachi Tiradito (hamachi, ponzu, rocoto and coriander leche de tigre, sweet potatoes, tobiko, tapioka chips)” (CHF 25.00) is even better. I love the ponzu flavours and the hamachi fish – the combination is just spot on.

Yet, the “Zander y Cushuro (pike-perch, kimchi, aji amarillo beurre blanc, cushuro)” (CHF 29.00) is even better. Frankly, not so much because of the texture as the fish is mushed together not necessarily making it my favourite, but the other flavours really make for a great combination and, ultimately, for a great bite.

I haven’t picked the cauliflower in the past since I’m not the biggest fan of cauliflower. But, since it was ordered, I must say the “Coliflor Anticuchos (cauliflower, achiote, tamarind, hazelnuts, smoked soy yogurt)” (CHF 16.00) was actually great! Surprisingly enough, I must admit!

The “Camote Umami (sweet potato, dried olives, aji panca syrup, feta cheese)” (CHF 16.00) is a stuffed potato. Okay, a sweet potato. A stuffed sweet potato. Something fine, but nothing extraordinary really.

What I absolutely adored was the “Terrina de Cordero (tender lamb neck, celery root, five spice, buckwheat)” (CHF 28.00) which was just mesmerizing when you eat it – it’s full of flavour and great in texture. Just a bit which makes you absolutely happy.

The same is true for the “Chicharrón Andino (glazed pork belly, “mote” corn purrée, zarza criolla)” (CHF 22.00) which are just exquisite! Intense, full of flavour. Perfect texture!

Last but not least, the “Lasaña de Aji de Gallina (gyoza leaves, planted chicken chili, aji amarillo, pecannut)” (CHF 21.00) is something which is nice in terms of flavours. But super annoying to eat since it kind of breaks apart when you try to cut it.

The Barranco remains a good choice for a Peruvian-inspired dinner – it’s tasty, it’s delicious. The place is nice, a bit small, but nice. And the staff is friendly and makes sure you have everything you need and want when you’re eating there. Booking in advance is still recommended as there aren’t many tables available on short notice – but it seems that now, some are.
