Traditional cuisine from Lyon – an experience: Restaurant Le Poêlon d’Or (10. June 2022)

| July 4, 2022 | 0 Comments

It is a couple of years ago since I’ve last been to Lyon, but I have good memories of the cuisine from Lyon – so, upon arrival, I decided to try a very local experience again. And it started with “salami and bread” which is maybe not so local, but great to start filling a hungry tummy.

Then, it became more typical. I went for “herring with potatoes in oil, minced egg and shallots” (EUR 12.00) which is quite an intense dish – but, definitely to my liking, i.e., intense, full of flavour.

The “home-made terrine with chicken livers” (EUR 12.00) is something you either like or not. I personally do, but without bread it doesn’t work.

Last but not least, it was time for something typical French, i.e., the “home-made duck foie gras cooked ‘au torchon’ with warm toast and figs jam” (EUR 18.00). I liked it, sure, but I must also say that the fresh foie gras, seared on the grill, is just so much better than this.

For the main dish, I decided to go for something very local, so, I had the “traditional Lyon Quenelle of Pike au gratin with crayfish sauce” (EUR 22.00) which sounded interesting – and turned out to be mushy bread with sauce and a few crayfish (like 3 or 4). So, frankly, it was an interesting experience, but it wasn’t something I will order right away again.

Last but not least, I had the “lemon sorbet” (EUR 6.50) for dessert – which was industrially produced, but still edible.

The place itself is lovely, typical French, very Bistro-style like, and just appealing. The only thing I don’t like so much about French bistros is the fact that the tables are so tiny that it often becomes quite challenging with glasses, plates and a bottle of wine.

The waiter was friendly, attentive, and once he had taken up the order (which took a bit), also relatively swift when it came to any other request. All in all, if you’re looking for something local and decently priced, the Le Poêlon d’Or is a nice place to visit.
