Traditional French bistro food: Restaurant Café Sud | Français Bistronomique (11. July 2022)

The Café Sud was a selection by someone in the group and, to be honest, not something I would probably have walked into from the outside. But it actually turned out to be quite nice in terms of location, in terms of service, and in terms of food. Okay, to be fair, one had to be a bit patient when it comes to the service as they were not really that quick. Other than that, though, they were quite lovely. I went for the “foie gras poêlé (hot duck foie gras on the pan, poached pear with port wine)” (EUR 22.00) to start which was overall quite nice – since it was aromatic, full of flavour, and generally enjoyable.

The “filet de boeuf au St. Marcellin (grilled fillet beef with aromatic wood, potatoes with thyme and St. Marcellin)” (EUR 33.00) on the other hand was a bit of a surprise. Apparently, the dish is rather typical for France, but the St. Marcellin cheese on top of the beef fillet is really a stretch since the cheese is quite intense in terms of taste and somewhat overwhelming when it comes to the taste.

The “assiette de fromage” (EUR 12.00) on the other hand was absolutely nothing exciting. I mean, the cheese was not bad but from a French restaurant, I would have definitely expected much more when it comes to cheese.

So, to sum it up, the place is overall quite nice, the service is friendly, and after you have received your menu, things actually start improving. So, while I had not expected much, I was positively surprised of the dishes. All in all, good, but nothing mind-blowing either.
