Unfortunately, quite of a disappointment when looking for soul food: Restaurant Mamacita (11. September 2022)
Finding a restaurant which is open on a Sunday evening is not as easy as I had expected. Well, of course, there are quite a few tourist traps, but I tried to avoid those and was looking for hidden gems, for recommendations, for the places you would not find easily. And while there were a few, they were either already closed or generally closed on Sundays, or closed for good. So, after having tried six different spots in the whole city – unsuccessfully, I decided to go for some soul food and went to the Mamacita.
As a starter, I went for the “Quesadillas de Queso y Cilantro (goat cheese, fresh cow cheese, and coriander)” (EUR 11.50) which was decent if you added some Habanero sauce on it. Far from a real Mexican quesadilla, but you can eat it. Charging EUR 11.50 for a bit of melted cheese in a tortilla seems a bit off, though.
The “Tacos Al Pastor (pulled beef, chipotle salsa, mint, tarragon, red pepper, jalapeño pickles)” (EUR 10.50) were the best dish of the evening. Frankly, not really like the real ones either, but definitely closer, and all in all enjoyable.
The “ceviche Mexicana (codfish aguachile, pomegranate, salsa guacamole, red cabbage pickles, potato and sweet potato fries)” (EUR 23.00) was, well, yeah. It was. I mean, it wasn’t bad, but it was far from exciting, unfortunately.
The place is buzzing, loud, has friendly staff (although not all of them are at the same level of competency), but it’s just not ticking the boxes when it comes to food if you expect Mexican dishes. As a Tex Mex, it’s relatively okay, as a Mexican, not so much.
