All in all a nice experience, but it feels a bit like it wants too much: Restaurant Choupette – presque une brasserie (31. January 2024)

I love being out of Zurich for a while, because it means that there will be new restaurants to discover once you’re back. And since this was the case, I figured I should visit all or at least most of the new restaurants in town. The “Choupette – presque une brasserie” is one of these places, which have just opened. Firstly, they were super flexible accommodating one more person at our dinner table (i.e., increasing the table size from 2 to 3), secondly, they were also flexible moving the reservation 10 minutes before the reservation time to one hour later. So, I had already quite a good impression even before walking in there.

Once you’re seated and have ordered what you want to eat, they’ll serve you some “bread and butter”, and that is actually decent. Frankly, rather average, but okay.

I went for the “Tartare de Boeuf Filet (pickled vegetables, spicy home-made sauce, grilled sourdough bread, fresh herbs)” (CHF 29.00) as a starter, which was overall enjoyable. Sure, it wasn’t the absolute best tartare I have ever tried, but it was absolutely decent and the combination of different ingredients actually worked well. The only thing I was missing a bit was butter.

The “veal chop” (CHF 68.00) was the dish of the day, and as such amazing in terms of texture and flavour profile. However, the “risotto with lemon from Amalfi” (CHF 12.00) was a bit of a disappointment. Firstly, the portion was rather small, secondly, the taste wasn’t really all that amazing. So, while I can absolutely recommend you to try the veal chop, I cannot really vouch for the risotto.

All in all, the Choupette is a nice place, which definitely offers decent food, but it is – even for Zurich standards – a bit on the expensive side of things, which you have to keep in mind. And while the staff actually does a great job, the tables are rather small, hence, it’s a bit annoying to have more than two dishes on the table. Despite that, the place was crowded, so I would highly recommend you to book your table well in advance.
