One of my favourite restaurants in Zurich for sure: Restaurant Silex (16. April 2024)
The Silex remains a favourite of mine – whenever I’m there, it just feels like it’s a great place to return to and to enjoy your time here. This time, we went for “raw and fermented cabbage, mint, chilli” (CHF 8.00) and “kohlrabi, dried egg yolk, ricotta, and herbs” (CHF 9.00) and while the cabbage didn’t look too appealing, it turned out to be quite delicious. And the same was true for the kohlrabi wrap with the dried egg yolk on top. Frankly, two excellent first dishes to start the dinner.
Next in line was the “green asparagus, fermented green tomatoes, almonds, and caramelized onions” (CHF 23.00) and while it looked largely like a salad, it turned out to be quite a delicious bite with the parts ‘hidden’ below the salad.
The “white cabbage, roasted in butter, verjus beurre blanc, sunflower seeds, quince” (CHF 38.00) didn’t catch my eye, optically. And I was rather sceptical about the dish too – however, it turned out to be quite delicious in the end, which was a welcome surprise.
The “cheese, Scottish oatcakes and fruit mustard” (CHF 16.00) was quite nice and not a massive portion, which was great after having eaten quite a bit already.
However, the “croissant ice cream” (CHF 6.00) was something we had to try after, and while the croissant cracker on top was definitely not necessary, the ice cream actually turned out to be mouthwatering delicious.
What I really like about the Silex is the combination between delicious food, great vegetarian options, friendly service, a nice atmosphere, and a passionate sommelier. The place is – and rightly so – almost always fully booked (at least that is my impression), so I would highly recommend you to book your table in advance.
