A decent version of Korean BBQ, but not necessarily the most appealing place: Restaurant Shilla (17. April 2024)
It’s about 4 years ago since I’ve last been to the Shilla, and I was surprised how full the place was for a Wednesday evening – and while we were there, there was even a turnaround of the tables. So, it seems like this place really has found its way. And frankly, I get why! We went for the “Kimchi Jjinmandu (Korean dumpling bag with kimchi filling)” (CHF 10.00) as one starter, which were quite nice and enjoyable to start with. A little crispy, without being overly crispy.
The “Chicken Gunmandu (fried dumpling with chicken filling, served with soy sauce)” (CHF 10.00) were a bit more tricky to eat as they were a bit softer when it comes to their outside, but they were equally delicious. So, to get started, my palate was all set up!
What the Shilla is famous for is their Korean grill, hence, you have to pick your meats and once you have them, you can grill them by yourself on the table’s grill. We went for the “Galbi Special (rib meat of the beef, portioned feather with bone marinated in fruit sauce) (300gr)” (CHF 53.00) and the “Rib Eye Jumulleock (rib eye in garlic fruit marinade) (150gr)” (CHF 45.00), which gives you enough meat for two people (with all the side elements). The meat was good, and if you cook it to your desired temperature, then it really becomes a nice and tasty experience.
There is, of course, kimchi, pickled vegetables and sprouts to put into your salad leaf wrap.
And don’t forget to splash your meat, once it’s off the grill, in the “onion sauce”.
The salad leaves are there to serve as a wrapper in which you put your meat and the rest. For those who have never tried Korean BBQ, it’s like wrapping your food in a tortilla, but the tortilla is a salad leaf.
Of coure, there is the mandatory bowl of rice and the dips, salt, and spicy sauces.
All in all, I really liked the experience at the Shilla – great food and swift service. However, in terms of interior atmosphere, I’m a bit torn. They have a nice decoration, but the whole place still feels, to some degree, a bit simple. In any case, if you’re interested in Korean BBQ, then the Shilla is a nice spot – just make sure to book in advance.
