A delicious Oaxacan food experience with a delay in the kitchen opening: Restaurant Guzina Oaxaca (28. May 2024)

The Guzina Oaxaca was also recommended, and my hopes were rather high. Personally, they were not full satisfied, but almost. When we arrived at 1pm, we were informed the food orders could not be placed before 1.30pm (don’t ask me why!) In any case, I went for a “Mojito de Cerezas (ron, cerezas, hierbabuena)” (180 MXN) to ‘bridge the time’, and I must say, I absolutely love the cherry mojito, definitely a great choice.

Then, to make sure you would have something to snack, they are preparing your salsa freshly at your table, and they ask you how spicy you want your salsa – and prep it accordingly.

Once, you have the final “salsa & chips”, it’s worth digging in and trying the different kinds of chips.

Given we were not too hungry, we decided to go for a few starters and took the “taquitos de Hoja Santa con chapulines (quesillo, pasta de frijol, crema de rancho, queso istmeño, salsa morita)” (195 MXN), which were great in flavour, but due to their stuffing also rather heavy in therms of flavour profile. In any case, an enjoyable bite for sure.

The “taquitos de cerdito (salsa verde cruda con agaucate, chicharrón de cerdo)” (225 MXN) were nice, but personally, since it would have made it much easier to eat the tacos, I would have preferred for the pork belly pieces to be sliced a bit thinner, but getting a few more pieces. In any case, they were delicious!

Finally, the “taquitos de pato con mole coloradito (crema de rancho, queso fresco, perejil, cebolla morada)” (285 MXN) were great as well. The only thing, which I always struggle a bit with, is the mole, due to its intense flavour. It kind of coats everything else. I love the mole the way it was served in Pujol (see here), but when you have it over the rest, then it is really somewhat overpowering.

In any case, the place is rather nice, and the staff is friendly and attentive – so, if you are coming 30 minutes later at 1.30pm instead, I imagine it to be a great experience without waiting time instead of a great experience with waiting time.
