An exquisite lunch offering with a lovely set menu: Restaurant Breda (9. June 2024)
I was looking for a tasty, but relaxed lunch option on a Sunday, which wasn’t entirely easy since quite a few restaurants are closed that day. I ended up finding the Breda, which wasn’t all too full at 1pm, and decided to go for the “5-course lunch menu” (EUR 56.50). Be aware that you have to do a down payment of EUR 25.00 at the time of the booking, which will be deducted from your final bill.
Once I was seated, I had to be patient as for 7 minutes, no one came to attend me, but I saw that the waitress was all alone responsible for the whole restaurant and there were quite a few dishes coming from the kitchen, so she was running non-stop. Once she had a free minute, I was informed how the menu works, and shortly after a “fish skin cracker” was brought as an amuse bouche, which was actually delicious to get your palate moving.
The first course of the menu was “pickled fish with tomato essence”, which was – frankly – great. The saltiness of the fish went perfectly well with the balanced tomato essence. And the bread with the butter was absolutely delicious – so, a great first course.
Then it was time for “beet root with butter milk” and I must say, that dish was good too. Somehow the components worked quite well together and it definitely made your taste buds dance.
Next in line was the “cod fish”, which as served in an emulsion and finished with some lime – and while I’m not always such a big fan of cod due to its texture, I must say, this one was good – still not a fan of the texture, though.
The main course was “guinea fowl with a sauce of pickled mustard seeds in a sauce of black garlic, as well as onion purée”, which was delicious. The guinea fowl is something peculiar, for sure, but it worked rather well with the sauce and the other elements on the plate, especially since the meat is lean and soaks up the sauce perfectly.
Then it was time for the pre-dessert, which was refreshing and sweet.
Last but not least, the main dessert was the perfect ending to the lunch – not as sweet as the pre-dessert, but overall quite nice.
The place itself is nice and definitely provides a comfortable atmosphere. The staff is friendly and attentive, and they take sufficient time to explain the dishes to you – which is lovely. And I must say I found the dishes absolutely great – especially considering the price of the menu. And on top of that, despite the many courses, I didn’t feel full after all the dishes – they are of perfect size so you feel like you’ve eaten enough, but you don’t fill overwhelmed. Booking in advance, even though it wasn’t full on a Sunday at lunch, highly recommended.
