Exquisite food, but bad service: Restaurant Al Capitan Della Cittadella (3. August 2024)

One says “Clothes make the man” and I suppose this is entirely true. Frankly, it was quite surprising to see how much they actually looked upon us when we entered after a day of sightseeing in very touristic clothes. Yes, admittedly, the place is somewhat fancy, but not overly so. So, in any case, you could feel immediately that they were only semi-welcoming us when they brought us to the table.

Since my sister is highly allergic to all kinds of mussels, I had asked the waitress that she would kindly make sure that there is absolutely no shellfish in the respective dishes. And she nonchalantly agreed that of course this was taken care of. Now, what was amazing to see is that the first dish, the amuse bouche, served was … “aubergine on a toast topped with a mussel”. I mean, come on? Did you even try! So, obviously, the mood wasn’t the best on the waitresses side after I told her that this is absolutely unacceptable.

In any case, one cannot say anything bad about the quality of the dishes. We went for the “raw red prawns” (EUR 110.00 per kilo) (EUR 42.00), which were absolutely mouth-watering. One doesn’t get such delicious food too often, and frankly, especially not for that price.

It’s approximately two years ago since I’ve last tried “Venetian-style spider-crab” (EUR 23.00), but I liked it as much as back then – the crab meat is delicious and the little mayo dot on the side really worked amazingly well with it (it wasn’t regular mayo, but it had a flavour, although, I wasn’t able to identify which one).

The “fried anchovies in Panzanella salad” (EUR 21.00) were okay, but definitely the weakest dish that evening. The combination of flavours and textures worked well, but it would only be truly good if you would mix all the elements together, which wasn’t entirely easy to bring everything onto the same fork.

The “octopus risotto with tomato, marjoram and katsuobushi” (EUR 22.00) was exquisite. The texture was perfect, the rice had still a bit of a bite to it, and the octopus was fitting perfectly into the dish, so, all in all, it was a great dish.

And frankly, that is what was annoying me in the end – the place is lovely, the food is really amazing and fair in price, but the staff is really not up to the task. Not taking an actual allergy seriously was the start – but when we asked, before the main course, for a recommendation by the sommelier, and the waiter finally managed to bring the guy to the table about 15 minutes later, it was too late. I mean, honestly, it’s such a pity, because the food is absolutely outstanding. However, I wouldn’t go again, because it just felt like you’re not attended properly.
