Perfect final breakfast experience in Iceland – if you’re patient: Restaurant Sandholt (22. August 2024)
Given the dining experience the previous evening, I decided to have one last interesting brunch experience before leaving Iceland and went to Reykjavík before take off to have breakfast at the Sandholt. And upon arrival I was rather surprised that at 8.50am you would have to queue for about 20 minutes until you get a table! Which is an indication of how popular the place is (and how good the food is). Once you’re seated, which takes its time, you’re eventually taken care of by the waiter, but you have to wave at them as they are not really what one would call attentive.
Once you’ve placed your order, though, things move relatively quickly. I had picked the “Lambasteikarsamloka (lamb tinga sandwich; sourdough bread, slow-cooked pulled lamb shoulder, mustard, chipotle sauce, cheese, pickled cabbage, coriander cream)” (2’890 ISK), which was absolutely delicious. Sure, a bit fatty in terms of overall experience, but definitely on the tasty side of things.
Secondly, I went for the “grillud ostasamloka (grilled cheese sandwich; sourdough bread, cheese, butter, sriracha cream)” (2’590 ISK), which was great too. So, frankly, they offer great dishes in a nice atmosphere with friendly, but slow service for fair prices.
The place is simple and functional, so, nothing special, but you can easily spend some time here, enjoying your coffee and your dishes while watching people walk by (especially if you’re lucky enough to get a table by the window as I was).
To sum it up, from a food experience, I get why people queue up to 30 minutes to have breakfast (or brunch) here, however, from a service perspective, you need to be patient.
