A near-perfect evening topped off with spotting the Northern Lights: Restaurant Rhubarb @ Prestonfield House (10. October 2024)
If you have a chance to visit the Prestonfield House and have dinner at the Rhubarb, you should absolutely do that. The place is an old manor, which has been repurposed years ago into a hotel, and it still carries all the tradition with it, and is so much worth visiting. The dinner that evening started with “pork pressing with soy and honey glaze, Bramley apple jelly, black pudding and bacon crumb, apple butterscotch sauce”, which was quite different from what I have had the past two days, and I must say, it was truly enjoyable.
The “Tweeddale beef rump, Anna potatoes, Auchertool beef black pudding croquette, smoked celeriac, broccoli, lemon and croissant crumbs” was next, and I liked that they added the black pudding croquette to the meal, since it really added quite a bit to the dish. The meat was great since it was cooked perfectly and the flavour profile was exquisite.
As a dinner, they served a “vanilla crème brûlée”, which was great, but the portion was just way too big. Usually, a crème brûlée is about 1.5cm “high”, this one was rather 3-4cm high, so it was quite a bit to eat.
Then it was time for the cheese platter (which had been missing the previous night), which consisted of “St Andrews farmhouse cheddar, Paddy’s Milestone, Ayrshire Dunlop and Heridean Blue with rhubarb and ginger chutney, oatcakes” and I must say, I quite enjoyed it. Sure, the portion was rather generous, especially since the cheeses were absolutely intense in terms of flavour, but since I like that, it wasn’t an issue at all, but rather enjoyable.
Now, what is truly amazing about the Prestonfield House is the view and the interior. The way they light up the way to their stables is just as breathtaking …
… as the little candlelight dinner look-out you could have dinner in …
… or the entrance to the hotel rooms …
… the ceiling …
… or any of the rooms, ranging from something like a living room …
… to the traditional men’s room with chairs made out of moose antlers and crocodile leather …
… or finally the dining room where we had dinner.
They even have one of the first edition Louis Vuitton suitcases on display at the entrance.
The whole thing was just topped off by the fact that the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) were actually visible that night and, frankly, it was breathtaking.
So, if you have a chance to dine at the Rhubarb in the Prestonfield House, absolutely do so. The place is amazing, the food is great, the service is outstanding, and the whole atmosphere just takes you into another state of mind.
