Visiting an institution in Napoli: Restaurant Umberto (19. October 2024)
Apparently, the Umberto is an institution in Napoli, so, I was quite curious to discover how that institution would be. We had booked a table for five, but since one of the group had missed his flight, we ended up being four, which put the restaurant at a challenge, because they had to adjust the number of plates and chairs and that was apparently not foreseen, so we got seated at another table.
The staff was super friendly, and you could see that most likely, the majority of the people working there, have been around for quite a while. As a primo piatto I went for the “gnocchi con peperoncini verdi (typical potato gnocchi with seasonal green peppers, smoked provola, Vesuvian tomatoes and grated Cacioricotta cheese)” (EUR 15.00), which were absolutely great. The combination with the cheese and the sauce made them into a creamy, tasty combination. Loved the starter.
As a main course, I went for another signature dish of theirs, the “Polpette di Nonna Ermalinda (Neapolitan meatballs cooked in 3 different ways (steamed, fried, baked) and typical Neapolitan aubergine parmigiana)” (EUR 16.00), which was fine. I mean, the meat balls were interesting, but in my personal opinion, they were too dry, so you really needed some sauce, and the amount of sauce they were served with was not enough. So, that was a bit of a disappointment. However, the parmigiana was absolutely delicious.
The “spinaci scottati (seared spinach with butter and Parmesan cheese)” (EUR 7.00), which I had picked as a side dish were decent as well, so, I got my ‘vegetable load’ for the dinner.
The place is very traditional, the tables are close to each other, and it’s very lively. The staff is friendly and attentive, and even a bit joking. So, all in all, they take excellent care of you. I would highly recommend you to book your table in advance.
