A great Greek dinner experience in central Zurich: Restaurant Yamas (20. November 2024)
It’s a good five years ago since I’ve last been to the Yamas and the place looks largely the same. I believe the menu has slightly changed compared to the past, but other than that, the place is still rather nice. I went for the “pita bread” (CHF 3.00) with “Baba Ganoush (Melitzanosalata) (Aubergine dip with tahini, pomegranate seeds, and pumpkin seeds)” (CHF 12.50) since the Baba Ganoush was the only dip. Usually, I’m not such a big fan of Baba Ganoush, but I was actually positively surprised by the quality of the spread and the smoothness of its flavours.
The “pita bread” (CHF 3.00) with “seasoned olives (green and from Kalamata)” (CHF 6.50) was still nice, and the olives were good.
The “cheese platter (150gr) (two Swiss and one Greek cheese with seasonal jam)” (CHF 21.50) was a bit of a disappointment. I mean, the cheeses were fine, but somehow I had just expected a little bit more.
The “beef tartar (120gr) (with crispy trachanas, pickled carrots, herb mayo)” (CHF 28.50) was surprisingly smooth. The meat was tender and well seasoned and definitely great in combination with the mustard seeds and the carrots.
The “lamb 24 hours (slow steamed lamb, served on Greek pita with yogurt and florini coulis)” (CHF 29.50) was superbly tender and would dissemble in your mouth when you take a bite, however, it was somewhat lacking a bit that special kind of flavour you would look for.
Last but not least, we went for the “baklava cheesecake (with seasoned walnuts and mango passion fruit coulis)” (CHF 14.50) and the “lemon tart (lemon bergamot cream, meringue, lemon sorbet, and Greek coffee)” (CHF 14.50) and I must admit, the lemon tart was actually delicious in combination with all its ingredients.
All in all, the Yamas remains a good place, which offers delicious dishes in a lovely atmosphere – even though the place is small – and all of that with friendly staff and a superbly fair price. Given the place is relatively small and can only host a few people, I would highly recommend for you to book your table in advance.
